The Airservices Australia Chief Executive has made a sensible decision to take a step back in relation to the ADS-B in place of enroute radars. I totally support this. It will allow Australia to thoroughly check out the pros and cons of the various ADS-B systems and to go with the best.
Following is a quote from a statement filed on the Professional Pilots Rumour Network that is attributed to the Airservices CEO
“The introduction of ADS-B technology in lieu of enroute radars (often misnamed ADS-B in lower level airspace) is a significantly more complex matter than upper level airspace, and raises a number of operational and policy issues that require resolution before a decision to proceed can be made.
Airservices own consultation process has lead the organisation to conclude that some elements of the aviation industry and government need more time to consider the costs, timeframe and implementation issues associated with the introduction of ADS-B technology in lieu of enroute radars.
Airservices has therefore taken the decision to cancel the Request for Proposal (RFP) process for the purchase and installation of a quantity of ADS-B avionics.”
