NEWCASTLE AIRPORT
DON’T MENTION THE RADAR
CASA KEEPS THE FACTS HIDDEN
In a press release of 10 December 2008 the Civil Aviation Safety Authority claimed that Newcastle Airport would operate safely over the Christmas period. Nowhere in the press release do they mention that the radar system – so important in preventing accidents – will not be operating.
Former Chairman of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), Dick Smith, said, “Novocastrians are not stupid. They know that radar is one of the most important tools to ensure air safety. To actually have excellent radar equipment, but not use it in the highest traffic Christmas period, is nothing short of criminal.
Dick Smith said, “CASA’s Chief Executive, Bruce Byron – who is a pilot – knows that radar is a most important safety tool. That is why he does not mention it in the press release.
Dick Smith said, “Airline companies have prohibited their pilots from speaking out about the Newcastle issue, however one has posted his beliefs on the Professional Pilots Rumour Network website. He said:
“I will be flying a big jet into Willy soon …On this one I am with Dick...it is a national disgrace akin to third world ops that more and more risk be placed on the aircrew shoulders because AirnonServices and the ADF have failed to strategically plan their human resources…”
