TWENTY SEVEN AIR SAFETY

RADIO STATIONS TO BE CLOSED

TWO DAYS BEFORE THE ELECTION

In a cynical move to reduce costs by less than one tenth of a cent in the dollar, Airservices Australia has announced that they will close down the proven Australia wide “Flightwatch” VHF radio transmitting system.

This system, which has contributed to high safety levels for the last 50 years, provides weather and other safety information to pilots throughout Australia.  The existing Flightwatch transmitters are located everywhere – including Maningrida, Gove, Port Hedland, Mt Isa, Whyalla, Walgett, Mildura and Rockhampton.

Dick Smith said, “This decision has been made in virtual secrecy.  There has been no consultation with the industry that is affected.  Even the air traffic controllers have not been consulted.

Dick Smith has written to the Chief Executive of Air Services Australia requesting that the decision be reversed until consultation is undertaken and the completion of a proper safety benefit study.

Dick Smith said, “From my previous experience, I believe that Airservices will take no notice.  If this is the case I will make an application to the Federal Court of Australia for urgent injunctive relief.

“I am amazed that as an individual, I have to spend my money taking on the responsibilities of the Government when it comes to air safety,” said Dick Smith.
