Following is an email dated 2 September 2005 received from a reader in relation to ADS-B. The newsletter he mentions features an article supporting ADS-B. The letter below is self-explanatory.
Hi Dick,
Just got in the post the QBE Insurance mailer 'Avlinks'.. with a major 'spiel' on ADS-B. The propagandizing is bad enough,...but its written by a Phil Stacy..a member of the CASA SCC (Standards Consultative Committee), obviously beating their drum. Its a techo snowball on a roll... and noboby seems to be able to stop it!!
This 'miracle' airspace cure-all gizmo is touted in this article for every flying machine,... recreational, LSA, GA and ..gliders, all the low level, very VFR stuff.
While this will create lots of (ATC) jobs watching lots of screen covered in lots of dots, and in some areas no dots at all... what will that actually DO?
I'd rather be in a thermal with other glider pilots looking out the canopy than heads down trying to spot something on a PDA screen in the cockpit.
Like yr post says... for all the millions of dollars... where's the safety benefit???
If you read this Avlinks/ CASA propaganda article some of the 'excuses' for having ADS-B, in my opinion are spurious and fallacious.
Regards
Richard Rudd.
