Every now and the, your home is going to need a few small repairs to keep it running smoothly. One of the most common issues is a blocked or slow drain as a result of continued built up of gunk. Most people who are handy around the house should be able to do this themselves with a little elbow grease and a plunger.
Before attacking any plumbing job it is important that you turn off the water main and are dressed to get wet. Regardless of how careful you are, any plumbing job can get messy. For any parts that need to be replaced, be sure to take them to the hardware with you to ensure that you are getting the right replacement piece too.
For a plumbing trap repair
This is where the blockage is stuck in the plumbing trap (S-bend directly under the sink). This can be seen by looking down the sink with a torch. If there is a blockage there you will want to remove the trap from beneath the sink being careful not to bend any of the attached pipes. Be sure to have a waste bucket handy for any water and other waste that needs to be cleaned out.
Clean out the blockage thoroughly and check for any potential leaks in the pipes while you are at it because you don’t want any leaks or have to go back again in a few days. Now you can reassemble the trap and you will have a blockage-free pipe.
Using a plunger
Using a plunger can be slightly more challenging as it does require there to be some water pressure. Therefore, it is most useful when it is a complete blockage of the pipe but it can also be used on part blockages so long as you fill up the pipe until there is standing water in the sink, toilet pan or basin.
Once this is done, it is time to begin the plunging. Ensure that the plunger is placed over the pipe so that the hole is completely covered. Additionally, ensure you have ample space to move as you don’t want to be injuring yourself in the process. Forcefully work the plunger up and down until the blockage is worked free. Note that this may take a little while so keep at it and don’t give up to soon or you’ll release the pressure and have to start all over again.
